STEM- Where do I Go For for Help?

For teachers who are new to STEM, or even for the STEM veterans who get stuck from time to time, the question becomes: Where can I go for help?

Maybe you work in a district that has a STEM Director (Don't laugh.  Some actually do...SO jealous!) Or, maybe you are fortunate to work with a colleague who knows their way around and is willing to share.

For everyone else, it sometimes can be difficult to find help when all of your colleagues have a full plate and are struggling to keep their own heads above a sea of papers to grade.

So where do you go for help?  In this age of everything digital, Google is actually an excellent resource. By carefully selecting your keywords, you should be able to hunt down the information you are looking for.  If you're still having trouble, try Google's Advanced Search.  You can choose the keywords to include as well as exclude and even filter by filetype or region.

Another great search engine to try is NowRelevant.  NowRelevant is a automatically filters the results to things that were posted in the last two weeks.  So, no more reading old articles or research on a current topic.

What to explore a little differently?  If you'd rather watch a video than read an article, try a ClipBlast.  ClipBlast is a video search engine that searches professional video clips from top credible sources like CNN, NBC, CBS, BBC and others.

Trying other sites such as Scribd or Slideshare are a good bet too and usually yield some useable files like Word documents and PowerPoint presentations that you can easily reuse or rework (with attributions, or course). As always, be aware that these sites are not exclusive to education, so inappropriate content may exist.

When all else fails, you can always send me an email :) but these resources should be able to help answer your STEM questions and provide you with additional supplemental resources for your STEM lessons.

ClassDojo

ClassDojo is one of the most popular free "web 2.0" sites on the web for educators.  This fantastically simple site to use has teachers all over the world integrating ClassDojo into their classroom to help track and manage student behavior.  This is done through a very fun and simple user interface that has educators add a point (for positive or negative behavior) to reinforce appropriate behavior.  Also, CD allows educators to generate detailed classroom reports and share them w/ others (educators/parents) via email.  Finally, ClassDojo has one of the best resource sharing pages I've seen that allows educators to find out how others are using CD in their class, and print out resources too.

I highly recommend checking out ClassDojo by clicking here!!!

SlideIdea V. 4.0

SlideIdea Version 4.0 is now currently out.  This is an excellent free iPad app for creating stunning presentations/slideshows.  The new version allows users to upload a PPT/PDF and turn it into a narrated presentation (think 9Slides).  Also, users can now login w/ their Google or FB account.  Finally, SlideIdea still uses the innovative interface that makes it such a great learning tool for education by generating a unique ID code that allows a teacher to share their presentation w/ students.  This makes the learning experience interactive and is great for Guided Learning
or assessing students by the use of asking questions or polling.

I highly recommend checking out SlideIdea by clicking here!!!

iPractice Math

iPractice Math is a new (beta) site that is ideal for all things Math.  This is a great one-stop place to find online help such as: definitions, Math problem walk-thrus, worksheets, and more.  Best of all a user can search by subject (addition, fractions, algebra, etc) or grade level to find what they are looking for, and through an educational portal educators can get instant real-time reports on how their students are doing.

I highly recommend checking out iPractice Math by clicking here!!!

If

If is a very cool and fun free iPad game for SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) that I downloaded the other day for my kids.  This game takes place in an animated 3D world (Ziggurat) and allows users to make decisions that effect the outcome of the game.  I had a great time playing through game, creating my animal avatar, and making different decisions when interacting w/ other characters.  This game like Quandary, does a great job of helping students choose from right or wrong decisions and what is the appropriate way to interact w/ others.

I highly recommend checking out If by clicking here!!!

For my Pinterest board on Educational iOS Apps click here.

Toonia Storymaker

Toonia Storymaker is an excellent iPad app for digital storytelling.  This super fun app uses cartoon animations (think Toontastic) to create engaging stories and spark students creativity.  A user can choose between characters, settings, objects, and more to tell their story (by adding text).  Once a story is completed it can then be shared to iBooks.  Also, the more a student plays the more features and objects they unlock.  This is a great easy to use drag-n-drop app that is perfect for integrating technology into any grade (KDG on up) or curriculum.

I highly recommend checking out Toonia Storymaker by clicking here!!!

Below is a brief demo...

Math Heroes 1

Math Heroes 1 is one of my favorite mobile games (iOS/Android) for practicing basic Math skills.  This game is developed by the kid friendly mobile app developer Yogome, which develops excellent fun educational games (Recycle Hero, Science Hero, etc) starting their ever popular "Yogotars (avatars)".  Math Heroes has players trying to solve the Math equation before time runs out and either completing a activity or doing battle w/ an opponent.  Also, this game has high replay value as it allows students to unlock extra features the farther along they get in the game and it tracks their progress as well.

I highly recommend checking out Math Heroes 1 by clicking here!!!

Tocomail

Tocomail is an excellent site/iOS app for providing a safe email environment for children.  The way this works is a child gets a free email account w/ safe/approved contacts from a guardian.  Kids can then customize an avatar for their email account and even create drawings/paintings for email attachments.  Parents can setup and approve a contact lists, receive quarantined emails waiting for approval, reject or approval any email, etc.  Best of all, there is a content filter which quarantine the email it has any profanity and parents will be alerted if any bullying patterns are detected.

Is Nigeria Frustrating Your Academic Pursuit? Think Outside The Box And Study In Ghana!

Due to the high number of candidates seeking for admission in Nigeria, many students have thought outside the box and got themselves to the next level. What do i mean by this? In Nigeria, candidates seeking for admission are so much that one will begin to think if Nigeria really have tertiary institutions at all. Permit me to use the word, mismanagement! Nigeria Funds are mismanaged in all sectors, education sector inclusive.
Imagine a country that doesn't have the interest of the youth at heart, a country that can't admit student with a single exam, instead they write tons of exams just for one admission. Why is it so? The answer is simply GREED and CORRUPTION. Yes they want more money, from jamb forms, post jamb forms, pre degree forms, pre science forms, diploma forms, supplimentry forms etc, the more they want the money, the more they fail candidates, so that the candidates will come back for more. How will you explain the fact that jamb sold over 1.5 million + forms in the last jamb examination only for schools to admit 500,000 out of 1.5m. The remaining 1m + will do what? Fly i guess. Why won't they sell something close to what they want to admit? The most painful part of it all is that only 100,000 out of a possible 500,000 is on merit. Sad right? That's just a painful truth. Hope am not boring you with the sad story of Nigeria's poor education sector? It's a painful truth anyways.

Now back to why am writing this, we can help you gain admission in one of Ghana's finest universities with just your waec result. Ghana is one of Africa's fast growing countries, their education sector is so solid that one may begin to think if they have been there before Nigeria, peaceful environment, steady electricity, lovely people, just name them.
Hope am not taking too much time in telling you what i have for you? Hehehehe. Ok back to business, if you wish to study in All Nations University College, Koforidua, Ghana (ANUC in short), all you need is a 5 credit in waec and money for school fees, that's all! We work with the school, so if you want to study there, just send an email to us using our "contact us" page, or give our Ghana agent a call with the number +233548405043. We are committed to bringing the best to your door step.
Enjoy!!!

A 22-year-old Nigerian,
Emmanuel Ohuabunwa, has
made history at John Hopkins
University, United States of
America. Ohuabunwa from
Arochukwu, Abia State, has done
the nation proud by becoming
the first black man to make a
Grade Point Average of 3.98 out
of 4.0 to bag a degree in
Neurosciences in the university.
He was also adjudged as having
the highest honours during the
graduation that was held on May
24 this year.
For his efforts, he has won a

pursue a degree in medicine.
Besides, he has been inducted
into Phi Beta Kappa Society, a

Ohuabunwa, who was born in
Okota, Lagos and attended Lilly

he left Nigeria after his junior

Air Force Comprehensive School,
Ibadan, Oyo State.
He moved to the United States at
the age of 13, at that time he
was admitted into Fondren
Middle School, which was in the
middle of the ghetto, so he was
subjected to Racism, He said, ”
“Some asked me if I lived in mud
huts and ate faeces for
breakfast. I remember one day,
when I was walking to the
school bus, a boy came from
behind and punched me in the
face, called me an African and
walked away. It took everything
in me not to retaliate. I knew that
God had put me in the U.S for a
purpose and it did not involve
fighting or selling drugs or doing
the wrong things”.
But in spite of this humiliation
and racial prejudice against him,
the first in a family of three was
not discouraged. He faced his
studies and was always coming
top in his class. After he
completed his middle school
education, he passed the
entrance examination to
DeBakey High School for Health
Professions. It was at this school
that his interest in neurosciences
and medicine started.
Worried that his parents might
not be able to sponsor him to the
university, Ohuabunwa
purposed to work very hard. He
did and when the result of the
PSAT came, he performed so well
that he won the National
Achievement Scholar.
By virtue of this award, he
received certificates of
recognition from various
organisations including senators
from the Congress of both Texas
and the US. He also received
scholarship from the University
of Houston; Rice University,
Texas A&M Honors College and
many more.
He had also won the Principal’s
Award during the annual awards
ceremony at DeBakey High
School.
“During our graduation
ceremony at DeBakey, I also won
the Award for the Most
Outstanding Senior Young Man
and the student volunteer award
for my volunteer activities in the
State of Texas,” he said.
But his breakthrough came
when he won the Bill and Belinda
Gates Foundation full scholarship
to any university of his choice.
He worked hard and gained

Candidates Without ICT Knowledge To Forfeit Jamb Come 2015

THE Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde has stated that students and candidates who are not computer literate will not be allowed to write any examination coordinated by the board from 2015.
Meantime, the Senate President, Senator David Mark and the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde have harped on the importance of
proper education among the youths, saying it was the panacea to curb youth restiveness and other social vices in a country.
Mark, Ojerinde harps on Education as antidote to nation’s woes.
The attributed the myriads of problems like the recent insurgency in the Nort East, the militancy in the Niger Delta, the kidnapping in the South East and other crimes such as violence, armed robbery and drug abuse as a result of illiteracy.
The JAMB Registrar who was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Professor Odusola Ojerinde, his late wife memorial golf tournament in Otukpo, Benue State said part of efforts to improve education in Nigeria in line with global best practices was the introduction of Computer Based Test, CBT, for all the board’s examinations.
He announced that beginning from 2015, any student or candidate who was not computer (ICT) literate would have no business with JAMB conducted examinations even as he declared, “we are not going to compromise on that”.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr. Paul Mumeh, the JAM Registrar said it was for that reason that JAMB embarked on the establishment of Computer Based Centres across the country preparatory for all its examinations.
He stressed that examination was central to education and must be taken seriously at all levels.
Also speaking Senator Mark said he was committed to the development of education, adding, “because I believe that a well educated citizenry would be an asset to the nation.
“Besides being the foundation for any development, education liberates the people and curbs all forms anti social behaviors.
“Whatever, I can do to support education; I will not hesitate to do it. I want to bequeath education of our people especially in my constituency as a legacy. For me , It is the most important investment.’
The Senate President according to the statement explained that he promotes sports as the needed companion to education “because a combination of both will enhance peaceful coexistence, eradicates crimes, promotes unity and development.”

BoomWriter Lesson Plans

BoomWriter is a site/company I've worked w/ before has just released a number of lesson plans to help educators integrate BW into their curriculum.  For those that don't know what BoomWriter is, it's a fascinating innovative educational tool that educators are using around the world to turn their students into published authors.  This is all done in a safe environment built around an educational portal where teachers create and manage the student accounts.

The process to create a book is collaborative in nature and quite simple: a story starter is selected (or created from scratch) and each student takes place in writing the next chapter to follow, then anonymously the students read and choose which chapter they like best to include, and the process continues until the story/book is finished.  Upon completing the project an actual physical book can be ordered.  BoomWriter offers new teachers a free class copy of their first finished product and they also have a Technology Heroes program where every student can get their own published copy, for more info on that click here.

As to the BW lesson plans they are all aligned to Common Core Standards, developed by teachers, and are ideal for students grade 3 on up.

If you teach...
  • English Language Arts
  • Special Education

Wandoo Planet

Wandoo Planet is a new project that is in beta testing stages right now to help build an app that is kid-powered genome project.  The way this works is kids (6-14 yrs old) will play a interest-finding game that will help them choose movies and books through their personalized recommendation engine.  Also, the more the student plays the game the "smarter" the engine will get through its "adaptive learning system" algorithm (i.e. Web 3.0 anyone).

Here is more info from their promotional email...

“Leveraging children's interests is a powerful tactic when it comes to fighting reading deficiency, but unfortunately, it is not something that has been put into widespread practice,” said Rob Cullin, president and co-founder of Evanced Solutions. “Wandoo Planet was created to offer children a platform that lets them choose and discover their individual interests to promote reading success. We welcome the feedback of our beta testers who will help us make the game even better before its official release this spring.”

8 Operators Of Illegal Universities Persecuted By NUC

Report reaching our news desk has it that eight operators of illegal universities across the country, which have been closed, are being prosecuted, the National Universities Commission (NUC) says.
The illegal universities were published on
NUC’s weekly bulletin and made available on Wednesday in Abuja.
The publication, signed by NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, listed the institutions as National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State and North Central University, Otukpo, Benue State.
Others are Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu; Richmond Open University, Arochukwu; Abia State; West Coast University, Umuahia; and Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The list also includes Volta University College, Aba, Abia State as well as the illegal satellite campuses of Ambrose Alli University.
“In addition to the closure, the following `Degree Mills’ are currently undergoing court actions; the purpose of these actions is to prosecute the proprietors and recover illegal fees and charges on subscribers.
“For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk.
“Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognised for the purposes of NYSC, employment and further studies.’’
The bulletin also listed 55 illegal universities which had not been licenced and were closed down for violating the Education Act of 2004.
NAN recalls that NUC recently handed over two alleged fake professors to the police for prosecution.

Biteslide

Biteslide is a wonderful web tool w/ educational portal that teachers are using to create beautiful looking slidebooks/presentations.  This is all done through a very easy to use drag-n-drop interface and web browser plugin (a.k.a "Nibbler") for adding images, clipart, text and more.  Educators are using this for Project Based Learning, creating dynamic digital stories/scrapbooks, and even "flipping their classroom.  Best of all, the educational portal allows educators to create and monitor student accounts and projects.

9Slides

9Slides is a wonderful site/app that allows users to create engaging presentations by adding a video narration to their slides.  This is perfect for the "flipped" classroom model or for those educators interested in Guided Learning or even using a Pecha Kucha style presentation.  The way this works is simple, all a user has to do is upload a presentation (i.e. Keynote, PPT, etc) record their narration and sync to a slide and then publish.  Best of all a finished presentation can then be embedded into a site/blog.

Strengthening Rigor in STEM- Student Choice Menus

Student Choice Menus a very useful way to both differentiate student learning and strengthen rigor in the classroom.  Recall that rigor is for ALL students, not just our high performers or our gifted students, so all students can benefit from this model.

Since all students have different ability types, it sometimes becomes difficult to create a project that will force all students to stretch their thinking but not lose or confuse anyone.  Student Choice Menus are a viable solution because they can allows student choice yet meet each student where they are. They are great for easing students into STEM projects too because they allow students to "practice" having latitude in projects and "practice" students each working on different things.

Student Choice Menus can be created in a couple of ways:

Tic-Tac-Toe
Students are given a a tic-tac-toe board containing different tasks or explorations in each block.  Students will then choose a "path" to complete.

Restaurant Menu
Students are provided a list of choices in each category (Appetizers, Entrees and Desserts).  Students are then asked to choose to complete a set number of labs, tasks, etc. in each category.  The restaurant menu concept works well for younger students, but you might consider naming the categories differently for older students.

List Menu
Students are provided with a lists of explorations, experiments, tasks, etc.  Each one is assigned a point value based on its difficulty level.  Students will choose enough items to meet the point requirement determined by their teacher. (This is a great way to differentiate by assigning different point requirements to students.)

Even though Student Choice Menus are more rigid than how we would normally teach a STEM unit, they are a great introduction to STEM units and projects as they provide a small bit of choice and latitude in comparison to the choice and latitude in a normal STEM unit.

ClassFlow

ClassFlow is a new site that I just found out about from Larry Ferlazzo's excellent blog that reminds me a lot of Go Class.  Basically, ClassFlow is a cloud based learning platform that teachers can use to create digital lessons that can then be viewed on any browser based device (i.e. laptop/tablet).  These lessons can contain all sorts of media such as: images, videos, and more, and allows educators to assess student's learning in real-time.
