UNILAG VC Dies At 63

Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos is dead. According to reports, Professor
Sofoluwe slumped during a
meeting, yesterday, at the Senate
Chambers of the institution and
was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH). He was
confirmed dead after efforts to revive him failed. Our condolence goes to his family and the whole unilag community.

20 Killed In The Recent Bayero University Bomb Blast By The Boko Haram Sect

Attackers armed with bombs and guns opened fire at church services at a university on Sunday, killing around 20 people as worshippers tried to flee, witnesses and officials said. Explosions and gunfire rocked
Bayero University in the northern
city of Kano, with witnesses
reporting that two church
services were targeted as they
were being held on campus. One of the services was being
held outdoors, while the second
was inside a building, but with an
overflow audience outside,
witnesses said. Officials were unable to confirm
casualty figures, but an AFP
correspondent counted six
bullet-riddled bodies near one of
the two sites. At least another dozen bodies
could be seen on a roadside by
the university, but the exact
number was unclear. Musical instruments and half-
eaten meals could be seen at the
site of one of the services. An army spokesman confirmed
the attack but could not provide a
casualty toll. Lieutenant Iweha
Ikedichi told AFP that it appeared
the attackers used bombs and
gunfire in the assault. Witnesses said the attackers
arrived in a car and two
motorcycles, opening fire and
throwing homemade bombs,
causing a stampede. They said
worshippers were gunned down as they sought to flee. “They first attacked the open-air
service outside the faculty of
medicine,” one witness said.
“They threw in explosives and
fired shots, causing a stampede
among worshippers. They now pursued them, shooting them
with guns. … They also attacked
another service at the sporting
complex.” A witness who said he was at the
sporting complex at the time of
the attack reported hearing
gunshots outside while they were
praying. “Then there was pandemonium,”
he said, adding that he later saw
two men outside shooting
indiscriminately. A crowd of people later gathered
at a Kano hospital waiting to hear
news about friends or family. There was no immediate claim of
responsibility, although the attack
was similar to others carried out
by the Islamist group Boko
Haram. Boko Haram claimed January 20
attacks in Kano, the largest city in
Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north,
when coordinated bombings and
shootings left at least 185 dead in
the extremists’ deadliest attack yet. On Thursday, bomb attacks at the
offices of the ThisDay newspaper
in the capital Abuja and the
northern city of Kaduna left at
least nine people dead. The group has previously
targeted churches, including on
Christmas day when at least 44
people were killed in a bombing
at a church outside Abuja. A bombing on Easter Sunday in
Kaduna near a church that killed
at least 41 people was a stark
reminder of the Christmas attacks,
but Boko Haram is not known to
have claimed it. Boko Haram’s increasingly
bloody insurgency has claimed
more than 1,000 lives since
mid-2009. Police and soldiers
have often been the victims of
such attacks, although Christians have been targeted as well. It also claimed responsibility for
an August suicide attack at UN
headquarters in Abuja which
killed at least 25 people. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous
nation and largest oil producer, is
roughly divided between a
mainly Muslim north and a
predominantly Christian south. Boko Haram initially claimed to be
fighting for the creation of an
Islamic state in Nigeria’s north,
but its demands and structure
have become less clear in recent
months. It is believed to have a number of
factions, including those with
political motives as well as a hard-
core Islamist wing. Criminal
groups are also believed to have
carried out violence under the guise of Boko Haram. An attempt at indirect dialogue
between the group and the
government in March collapsed,
with a mediator quitting over
leaks to the media and a
spokesman for the Islamists saying they could not trust the
government. President Goodluck Jonathan,
during a visit Saturday to the
newspaper offices in Abuja hit by
Thursday’s suicide attack, did not
answer directly when asked
whether dialogue was necessary to stop the violence. “You may dialogue, you may not
dialogue depending on the
circumstances,” Jonathan told
reporters, adding: “But we will
exploit every means possible to
bring this to an end.”

Nigerian Navy Announces A Change In The Date Of The Entrance Examination

The Nigerian Navy has announced a change in the date of the entrance examination into Navy Secondary Schools from April 21 to May 19. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Commodore Kabir Aliyu, the Director of Information of the Nigerian Navy. The statement noted that the announcement was to notify the public, especially parents, that the date for the examination into the schools for 2012/2013 academic session had been changed. It added that the designated examination centres remained the same, urging prospective candidates to take note of the change in date. (NAN) Share with friends.

Another Nigerian Graduates With Best Grades From Turkish University

Some couple of days back, we all had the news of twenty-two year old Emmanuel Ohuabunwa who broke academic record at the John Hopkins University in the United States. Click here to read the full story.
Another Nigerian student in Turkey has given the country more reasons to be proud. Tunji Anthony Olu-Taiwo from Ifako-Ijaiye Local government
area of Lagos state has recently graduated from Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish republic of North Cyprus as the best graduating student from the Faculty of Engineering. He finished with a Grade Point Average of 4.00 out of a possible 4.00 (straight A’s).
He obtained a degree in
Computer Engineering.
Tunji was born in Kano, Nigeria where he attended Air force Nursery and Primary school. He completed his secondary education at St. Thomas Secondary School in Kano.
Shortly afterwards, another Nigerian, this time twenty-one
year old Chibundu Onuzo was declared UK’s Number 1 black student as a result of her excellent academic performances and other exploits in creative writing.
Naija don dey rise. Congrats guys, you guys have made us Nigerians proud!

22 Year-Old Nigerian Comes Out With Best Grades From John Hopkins University, USA

A 22-year-old Nigerian,
Emmanuel Ohuabunwa, has
made history at John Hopkins
University, United States of
America. Ohuabunwa from
Arochukwu, Abia State, has done
the nation proud by becoming
the first black man to make a
Grade Point Average of 3.98 out
of 4.0 to bag a degree in
Neurosciences in the university.
He was also adjudged as having
the highest honours during the
graduation that was held on May
24 this year.
For his efforts, he has won a
scholarship to Yale University to
pursue a degree in medicine.
Besides, he has been inducted
into Phi Beta Kappa Society, a
prestigious honour group that
features membership of 17 US
Presidents, 37 US Supreme Court
Justices, and 136 Nobel Prize
winners.
Ohuabunwa, who was born in
Okota, Lagos and attended Lilly
Fields Primary School, Lagos, said
he left Nigeria after his junior
secondary school education at
Air Force Comprehensive School,
Ibadan, Oyo State.
He moved to the United States at
the age of 13, at that time he
was admitted into Fondren
Middle School, which was in the
middle of the ghetto, so he was
subjected to Racism, He said, ”
“Some asked me if I lived in mud
huts and ate faeces for
breakfast. I remember one day,
when I was walking to the
school bus, a boy came from
behind and punched me in the
face, called me an African and
walked away. It took everything
in me not to retaliate. I knew that
God had put me in the U.S for a
purpose and it did not involve
fighting or selling drugs or doing
the wrong things”.
But in spite of this humiliation
and racial prejudice against him,
the first in a family of three was
not discouraged. He faced his
studies and was always coming
top in his class. After he
completed his middle school
education, he passed the
entrance examination to
DeBakey High School for Health
Professions. It was at this school
that his interest in neurosciences
and medicine started.
Worried that his parents might
not be able to sponsor him to the
university, Ohuabunwa
purposed to work very hard. He
did and when the result of the
PSAT came, he performed so well
that he won the National
Achievement Scholar.
By virtue of this award, he
received certificates of
recognition from various
organisations including senators
from the Congress of both Texas
and the US. He also received
scholarship from the University
of Houston; Rice University,
Texas A&M Honors College and
many more.
He had also won the Principal’s
Award during the annual awards
ceremony at DeBakey High
School.
“During our graduation
ceremony at DeBakey, I also won
the Award for the Most
Outstanding Senior Young Man
and the student volunteer award
for my volunteer activities in the
State of Texas,” he said.
But his breakthrough came
when he won the Bill and Belinda
Gates Foundation full scholarship
to any university of his choice.
He worked hard and gained
admission to Johns Hopkins
University to study
Neuroscience.

2012 WAEC Results Claims Lives Of Two Female Students In Delta State

This year's waec results, recently released some weeks ago by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), claimed the lives of two female students in Delta State. The students were said to have written the exam three consecutive times without any success. They allegedly
committed suicide on the 22nd of this month, August, 2012, in Asaba the state capital. Reports said the students committed suicide after checking their result in the internet and discovered that it was unfavourable to them. The failure of English and Maths papers led them to allegedly resolve to commiting suicide. Other sources has it that the students had struggled to gain
admission into the University in the last few years without success. Police sources at the “B” Division
Asaba said the students were
allegedly found dead in their various rooms after a search party that was conducted.
Why would they do that? They value waec more than their lives? People wey no go school no dey this world again or what? May their souls R. I. P sha!

NYSC Batch B Corp Members Rejects Posting To Borno And Other Troubled States

Corps members posted to Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Bornu and Bauchi states have asked the National Youth Service Corps to redeploy them from these trouble states.
The corps members, who
expressed sadness as they
received their call-up letters for
the Batch B NYSC service year,
said they were confused as they did not know what to do due to the spate of bombings and other forms of insecurity in these states.
Some of the corps members and
their families, who expressed
their worries on various social
network sites including
Facebook and Twitter, said they
were extremely sad and
disappointed when they
received their call-up letters,
deploying them to trouble states
where there is currently curfew,
threats of reprisals and censeless
bombings.
Some of the comments on the
social network sites read, “We
need to arise and stop the
government from sentencing us
and our loved ones to death. Is
our government/NYSC this
heartless or simply inhumane?
We seek our immediate
redeployment, we want to live in
places where we can work with
peace of mind.’’
Our correspondents learnt that
authorities of the NYSC had also
been under pressure from
parents and prospective corps
members posted to northern
states, who had been seeking
alternative posting.
Our Correspondent learnt in
Abuja on Sunday that the NYSC
was already collaborating with
the affected states on how to
ensure security for the corps
members posted to their states.
But speaking through the Borno
State Commissioner for
Information, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, in
a telephone interview with our
correspondent in Abuja on
Sunday, the Governor, Alhaji
Kashim Shettima, made a case for
corps members to be posted to
the state.
He argued that the security
situation in the state was being
exaggerated by detractors to
further isolate the state from the
rest of the country.
He said, “While it is true that we
have security challenges, it is a
fact that these challenges are not exclusive to Borno State.
“We don’t have on record any
attack on visitors neither do we have any record of attacks on the NYSC camp or corps
members posted to and
currently serving in Borno State.”
