(UNIABUJA) have condemned the
purported pass of no confidence on
the Vice- Chancellor of the
University, Professor James
Adelabu and the call for his removal by a faction of the Academic Staff
Union of University of the
institution led by Mr. Clement Chup. They described the call as self-serving and not in the interest of the students. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the Director of National Affairs of UNIABUJA chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Aaron Aliyu, the University of Abuja has experienced commendable changes since Adelabu assumed leadership of the institution. Aliyu said the Vice Chancellor inherited monumental problems from his predecessor, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, and was only struggling to overcome them, stressing that he should be allowed to continue with his reform prgrammes. He said: “We are aware that recently the Federal Government suspended faculty of engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and mistakenly the Agriculture. But the Federal Government later changed her decision with a massive intervention of stake-holder in the institution. “As we all know that these faculties were then introduced by the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nuhu Yaqub and the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof J. S. Adelabu has worked tirelessly towards the improvement of these faculties in the university,” he said. He added that under the administration of the new Vice-Chancellor, four faculties were been
moved to the permanent site of the
institution, regardless of some of the huddles it met before the administration’s inception. He, therefore, said, “We condemn the
recent calling for the removal of the vice-Chancellor by the academic staff union of the university, that their calling arisen from the recent incidents, as baseless and has no facts but for selfish reasons. “That we the students of University of Abuja support the administration of
Prof. J. Adelabu as the Vice-chancellor and his management and compliment his transformation agenda for the provision of the good academic environment for the students of the university,” he added. Aliyu, who led other group of students at the media briefing called on the Federal Government to provide the facilities necessary for the upgrading and proper accreditation of the faculties of medicine, veterinary medicine and engineering.
